Why Zabouaka?
The Zabouaka site was chosen for its high ecological and social potential. Located in a semi-arid zone, this area is suffering from intense deforestation. The aim of the project is to reforest 6 hectares of degraded land, while creating economic opportunities for the local population.
Environmental and social issues
- Combating desertification: soil restoration and carbon sequestration.
- Preservation of water resources: installation of a solar irrigation system.
- Economic development: integration of agroforestry crops and fruit trees.
- Community empowerment: training in plantation management and agroecological techniques.
Project milestones in 2024
1. Site preparation and access to water
Before any planting, the team on site carried out hydrological studies and installed a well equipped with a solar water tower to ensure efficient watering. A protective fence has been installed to prevent cattle grazing the young plants.
2. Planting species adapted to the Sahelian climate
Several thousand trees have been planted, with the emphasis on drought-resistant species that benefit local biodiversity:
Forest trees: neem (Azadirachta indica), moringa (Moringa oleifera), tamarind (Tamarindus indica).
Fruit trees: mango (Mangifera indica), guava (Psidium guajava), lemon (Citrus limon).
Medicinal species: Ficus sur, Parkia biglobosa, Trichilia emetica.
3. Training and community involvement
An essential component of the project is the training of local populations. 30 volunteers from the Mossi and Peulh ethnic groups were mobilised to learn reforestation and agroforestry management techniques. This transmission of knowledge ensures the sustainability of the project and empowers local residents.
4. Plot monitoring and maintenance
Between September and December, rigorous monitoring was carried out to ensure the survival of the young plants:
– Regular watering thanks to the solar irrigation system.
– Replacement of dead plants.
– Plant health monitoring and application of natural soil improvers to enrich the soil.
For 2025, Treecolor Alliance plans to go even further:
–Optimising planting plans to improve ecosystem restoration.
–Training in the use of drones and GPS for precise monitoring of reforested areas.
– Acquisition of clearing equipment.
